Relaxation and Stress Management
In this world of constant stress and time pressure, it is vitally important that we take time for self-care in the form of relaxation, stress management and engagement in pleasurable activities. Doing so can send a soothing message to our nervous and immune systems that allow us to generate the resources we need to be resilient to the stressors around us. Not taking time to relax and enjoy life can lead to anxiety and depression, as well as frequent sickness and chronic health problems. |
It is unarguably difficult to find the time for self-care but Dr. Ferguson and her associates can show you how to start your individualized self-care program in as little as 15 minutes a day. Skills you may learn include deep breathing, cue controlled relaxation, relaxation imagery and progressive muscle relaxation among others. You can experiment with various skills until you find the ones that are best suited to your needs.

Stress management includes other skills in addition to relaxation. Knowing ourselves well and loving oneself enough to be aware of our own boundaries and to express these boundaries assertively is an important component of managing stress. Dr. Ferguson and her associates can help you learn a step by step process for being more assertive in your life. Cognitive therapy, worry control and specific strategies to help you fall asleep can help you to limit unwanted thoughts, particularly at the end of the day when the mind needs to wind down for rest.
